A clean sweep for the Cannes Yacht Club at the French Espoirs Championships

Wednesday 27 August 2025

What a summer for the Cannes Yacht Club! After Nathan Werhle's world title in Los Angeles (United States) at the ILC4 World Championships in the U16 (under 16) category, followed by Louise Rahn's title in Saint-Pierre Quiberon (Morbihan) in the RS Aero 5 in the U17 and U22 categories (under 17 and 22), the young delegation ended an exceptional August in Martigues (Bouches-du-Rhône) at the French Espoirs Championships.

In varied weather conditions, alternating between breezes and thermal winds typical of this scorching summer, the YCC competition team more than shone during the 12 or 13 races, winning eight medals in four categories, something no other club has ever achieved.

In the ILCA 4 girls' category, Louise Rahn was imperious all week and has all the makings of a future star. At just 15 years old, she logically won this French championship, her toughest opponent and runner-up Paloma Lopez de Silvanes being from the Cannes Yacht Club... and training with her under the guidance of the brilliant Pierre Gueguen. In addition to Paloma's second place, Camille Siguret-Ratti's sixth place is also worth noting.

In the ILCA 6 girls' category, currently an Olympic series, Capucine Deltel took a fine fifth place in the overall standings, but first in the U17 (under 17) category.

In ILCA 6, Nathan Werhle, who dominated the entire championship, had an off day on the eve of the final day, notably with a disqualification for an early start, before finishing strongly and winning, quite logically, after some near-perfect final races. Ulysse Raison, in 4th place, became French vice-champion in the U19 (under 19) category.

Finally, in 420, Frédéric Flandorffer, partnered with Ilan Vedel from Antibes, took a very impressive 3rd place.

Add to that Matisse Pacaud and Lucie de Gennes, triple junior world champions in 470, and now leaders of the French Olympic team thanks to their 3rd place at the Senior European Championships in Split (Croatia), the “Cannes school” or “champion factory,” as it is now nicknamed in the parking lots, continues to impress.

Jean-François Cutugno, president of the Cannes Yacht Club, who is deeply committed to dinghy sailing at the club and to competition, does not hide his joy: "What a source of satisfaction after this tremendous harvest in Martigues, with these young girls and boys who are as committed to training as they are talented and inspired in regattas! And God knows you have to be well-rounded to perform over the long term. Well done to the whole team, the coaching staff, and the volunteers."
